SEO for web design and development agencies. Launch sites that rank from day one.

SEO works best at build stage, not bolted on after launch. You build it beautifully; I make sure Google (and ChatGPT) can find it.

Beautiful new site. So why did traffic drop?

It’s the call every web agency dreads. The site looks incredible, the client’s thrilled, then their enquiries quietly fall off a cliff.

It’s almost never the design. It’s what happened to the old URLs, the content and the signals Google relied on.

  • Old URLs vanish

Pages that ranked for years get new addresses with no redirects, and Google treats them as gone.

  • Content gets trimmed

The new design is cleaner, but the copy that answered buyers’ questions went in the edit.

  • The basics slip through

A staging noindex left on, missing titles, a sitemap pointing at nothing. Small things, big drops.

And then the client asks

“Can you do our SEO as well?”

If the answer’s “not really”, their next agency conversation is with someone who can. Adding SEO to your services, without adding a salary, keeps that client with you.

How do you migrate a website without losing rankings?

Plan the SEO before the build, check it before go-live, and watch it closely afterwards. Here’s what I handle, around your project plan.

  1. Step 1: Benchmark the old site

I crawl it and record what ranks, what converts and which pages bring in the most traffic, so we know exactly what has to survive.

    Discovery
  2. Step 2: Map every redirect

Every old URL matched to its new home, plus guidance on content, templates and internal links.

    Build
  3. Step 3: Check before go-live

Staging crawl, noindex and robots rules, titles, canonicals, schema, sitemaps and redirects, all tested.

    Pre-launch

Technical SEO at build stage: what I check

It’s far cheaper to get these right in the wireframes than to fix them after launch. I review designs, templates and staging builds, then send notes your developers can act on.

  • Architecture

    URLs and site structure

Clean, logical URLs and a page hierarchy that matches how buyers search, agreed before anyone builds a menu.

  • Templates

    Headings and templates

A clear main heading, a sensible heading order, and templates that leave room for the copy that ranks.

  • Performance

    Speed and Core Web Vitals

Images, fonts, scripts and layout shift spotted early, before they get baked into the build.

  • Indexing

    Crawling and indexing

Robots rules, canonicals, XML sitemaps, pagination and filters that don’t trip Google up.

  • Schema + local

    Schema and location templates

Organization, Service, Product and FAQ markup built into templates, plus location page templates for multi-branch clients.

    Local SEO services

  • GEO

AI crawler access and answer capsules

GEO, getting cited in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, starts in the build: crawlable content, clear answers and the right bots let in.

How can a web agency offer SEO without hiring?

Partner with a specialist. You add SEO to your proposals, I deliver it behind the scenes (or on referral), and you skip the salary, the recruitment and the training budget.

  • Retain it

    Monthly SEO after launch

Ongoing SEO, including local SEO for clients with a shop, clinic or several branches, delivered white-label under your brand.

    White-label SEO

I set up the first build, then teach your team to repeat it

You shouldn’t need me on every launch forever. Two phases, and you decide how long I stay.

Phase 1

Build the foundations

I do the SEO on your next launch, under your brand.

  • Audit: the old site and the new designs
  • Fixes: redirect map, templates, schema
  • Strategy: what to publish after go-live

Phase 2

Hand over and teach

Then your designers and developers learn to do it themselves.

  • Training: an SEO launch session for your team
  • Playbooks: a launch checklist to keep

Or keep me on. For big migrations or clients who want ongoing SEO, I’m there whenever you need me.

Still white-label, start to finish: I train your team, and your client never sees me.

Pitching a redesign?

Bring a free GEO snapshot to the pitch

Send me the prospect’s URL and I’ll send back a short snapshot with your logo on it: how their current site shows up in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, plus three quick wins. A very handy thing to slide across the table.

SEO for web agencies: FAQs

Why should a web design agency partner with an SEO specialist?

Because clients expect a new website to bring in more business, and that depends on search. A specialist protects rankings during launches, makes the build search-friendly and gives you an SEO service to sell, without the cost of an in-house hire.

When should SEO start on a website project?

At discovery, before the wireframes. Site structure, URLs and templates are cheap to get right on paper and expensive to fix after launch. Bring me in at kick-off and I’ll work around your project plan.

Can you handle a website migration for our client?

Yes. I benchmark the old site, build the redirect map, check staging before go-live and monitor after launch. I quote migrations by the size of the site.

Do you work with our developers directly?

If you want me to. I send clear, prioritised tickets rather than 40-page essays, and I’m happy to comment in your project tool. Your client only ever deals with you.

Can you help us sell SEO in our proposals?

Yes. I can scope the SEO part of a proposal and join pitch calls as your SEO lead. You set your own price on top of my wholesale day rate: £500 per day.

Do you cover GEO as well?

Yes, it’s my specialism, and a lot of it is decided at build stage: content structure, schema and AI crawler access. See white-label GEO.

Can you train our designers and developers?

Yes. Once the first build is done, I teach your team an SEO launch checklist so every future site ships search-ready.

White-label or referral: which suits a web agency?

If you want SEO on your invoice and in your proposals, white-label. If you’d rather keep building and pass the SEO on, referral.

Plenty of agencies mix the two. Compare the partner models.

You build it. I make it rank.
